On Sunday July 13th, at the Schwaben Center in Buffalo Grove, The St.
Charles Comets (St. Charles Celtics affiliated team) overcame Palatine
Celtic by a score of 3-2 to win in the Men’s Soccer Illinois State Cup in
the over 30 division.
Palatine took an early lead in the game with an
individual goal from their leading forward. Throughout the first half, the
game ebbed and flowed but the Palatine forward was always a handful for the
St. Charles defense, and the score line remained 0-1 at the halftime break. |

For the second half, St. Charles changed tactics by having their Captain,
Dave Rout, man-mark and subdue the dangerous Palatine forward. The change
in strategy paid off and St. Charles midfielder, Karl Smith, was able to
scramble a goal early in the second half to tie the score. A lapse in
concentration allowed Palatine a second goal soon after Smith’s equalizer.
However, St. Charles’ continued pressure resulted in another goal this time
from the penalty spot by St. Charles’ leading goal scorer Rob Van de Graaf.
The momentum of the game had moved firmly in favor of St. Charles Comets.
Two minutes from full time the Palatine defense allowed Comet’s midfield
player, Larry Sunderland, too much space to settle on the ball and fire a
superb shot in the upper corner from outside the penalty area to clinch the
game with a spectacular third goal!
Congratulations to the St. Charles community for
their ongoing support and success in soccer and now home to the Men’s Over
30 Soccer State Champions!
