Saints now Celtics

The Celtics Soccer Club opened
its first season in what coach Bob
Heilman described as “not bad.”
With two wins and one tie, “not bad”
seems to be a good start.

The Celtics, formerly known as
Geneva United, consists of 26 (18
years or older) players from Geneva
and St. Charles, 16 who are former
St. Charles High School varsity
soccer players.

As a member of the senior men’s
Western Soccer League, the Celtics
have a 10-game season, beginning in
June and ending in late July, with
playoffs in August.

Heilman has high hopes for the Celtics this season. “There are 20 teams in the league,” he said. “The top three teams make the playoffs. We hope to be one of them, and we’re well on our way.”

In their first game of the season, the Celtics slipped by Lisle, 5-4. Dave Arrowsmith scored two goals, Ed Fleishman, Jim Heilman and Dave Haesli each scored one.

The second game against Addison provided some tough competition for the Celtics, both offensively and defensively, in a 1-0 win. Fleishman finally dribbled past Addison’s defensive line and scored the only goal of the game.

If it hadn’t been for Dave Weekly’s excellent goalie performance, the score might have turned around.

“Weekly was outstanding as a goalie,” Heilman said. “He’s probably the best goalie in the league. The best we have seen so far.”

The Celtics met their match when they were outplayed by Naperville in the third game of the season. Celtic Mitch Brown scored the first goal of the game and it looked as if the Celtics were going to win, but Naperville scored in the last two minutes of the game.

The Celtics play at Wheaton Monday and will be at the Kane County Fairgrounds Wednesday, July 8.
